Education
It is important for democratic governance that citizens be well informed about policy issues such as education. And yet, the current state of network news coverage leaves much to be desired. Some scholars have argued that network television news should devote more time to education, but others point out that those who produce the news work within serious time constraints and must choose between a broad range of topics.
Moreover, education does not have the same appeal as some other policy issues. It lacks the dramatic events, for example a bombshell set of test scores or a strike, that can draw the attention of news editors seeking to capture viewers’ attention. Nevertheless, it is important to examine how coverage of education is evolving over time. In particular, it seems worth studying how news coverage of education relates to broader trends in our society. We began by looking at four overarching typology categories: teaching and learning, structures of schooling, standards, and equity and diversity.
